AFG Success Stories
This page contains a synopsis of a fire department that has been awarded an AFG Grant.
Alpine Fire Department
San Diego County, California
What They Bought With the Grant:
New Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
How the Grant Has Helped:
Only a week after placing their new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) into service, two firefighters were caught in a propane explosion and fireball. Both firefighters caught fire and their SCBAs suffered extensive damage and their turnouts were toast. The firefighters received minor burns but no respiratory damage. They credit their new SCBA's in vastly preventing more serious injuries.

The pictures below show a small exterior-accessed laundry room of a motel in Alpine, California. A small fire of suspicious origin was quickly extinguished by the first in Engine Company. The two firefighters were investigating for extension of the fire when the explosion occurred. One firefighter was blown out the door. The fireball ignited a truck full of hay bales over 20 feet away from the building. The explosion occurred within ten minutes of the arrival by the first in Engine Company on the scene.
As you view the SCBA pictures, please note that these were brand new units being used on their first fire. The facepiece and PASS show signs of extreme heat and the shoulder strap was originally just one color.
Both firefighters have returned to duty.
